  • In 1833, the government abandoned the use of force to enforce tithe payments as it had alienated the rural Irish population and given them a reason to directly challenge British rule
  • Relief was supplied in the form of the 1832 Clergy Relief Act which provided loans from public money that were eventually written off by the government
  • The tithes issue was settled when it was replaced by the 1838 Tithe Rentcharge Act which made it only payable by landlords rather than all occupiers. This reduced agitation among tenant farmers and restored order in the countryside
