The government faces a number of problems trying to develop the Mezzogiorno as a tourist destination, in particular its peripheral location and poor transport network.
From the late 1950’s 15% of Cassa per il Mezzogiorno budget was spent on tourism. Some of the funding was used to improve hotels and self catering apartments in the regions.
Communication links were improved e.g. Autostrada del Sole.
The building of the international airport at Calabria made the region more accessible as airlines such as Ryanair began to fly into the region.
Ferry links were introduced to Sicily and Sardinia improving access.
The Cassa identified 25 areas for tourism in the region and focused on improving services in them.
