  • The government faces a number of problems trying to develop the Mezzogiorno as a tourist destination, in particular its  peripheral location and poor transport network.
  • From the late 1950’s 15% of Cassa per il Mezzogiorno budget was spent on tourism. Some of the funding was  used to improve hotels and self catering apartments in the regions.
  • Communication links were improved e.g. Autostrada del Sole.
  • The building of the international airport at Calabria made the region more accessible as airlines such as Ryanair began to fly into the region.
  • Ferry links were introduced to Sicily and Sardinia improving access.
  • The  Cassa identified 25 areas for tourism in the region and focused on improving services in them.
