  • William Harvey believed that blood circulated around the body and proved arteries, veins and blood vessels were connected. Thought the heart was a pump - influenced by new water pump invented.
  • Before William Harvey's discovery people thought there was purple blood (nutrition carrying that was made in the liver, flowed through veins and then consumed) and bright red blood (life-giving that was made in the lungs, flowed through arteries and then consumed).
  • Harvey developed Vesalius' work by dissecting humans and animals to gain a better understanding. Added to his diagrams as well.
  • William Harvey dissected animals so some of his ideas about medicine were incorrect.
  • William Harvey's research had limited impact as:
    • Blood transfusions were rarely successful - blood loss, shock and blood types
    • Bloodletting was still widely performed
