  • Communication is the process of sharing and conveying messages or information from one person to another within and across channels, contexts, media, and cultures
  • Ang (2004) defines communication as the transmission of messages via verbal and non-verbal cues
  • Comeaux (1996) describes communication as a transaction in which the participants are mutually engaged in the process of creating meaning
  • Nature of communication:
    • It is a process involving two or more people (the speaker and the receiver) It can be expressed through verbal, nonverbal, or both forms simultaneously
  • Verbal communication includes oral communication (spoken words) and written communication (exchanged in written form)
  • Non-verbal communication is expressed through expressions, gestures, or posture, including 12 types like appearance, paralinguistics, body movement, gestures, posture, facial expression, oculesics, touching, proxemics, chronemics, adornment, and environment
  • ELEMENTS OF COMMUNICATION
    Speaker: source of information or message
    Message: information, ideas, or thoughts conveyed by the speaker
    Encoding: converting the message into words or actions
    Channel: medium through which the encoded message is conveyed
    Decoding: interpreting the encoded message by the receiver
    Receiver: recipient of the message or someone who decodes it
    Feedback: reactions, responses, or information provided by the receiver
    Context: environment where communication takes place
    Barrier: factors that affect the flow of communication
  • Functions of communication:
    • Control: when employees communicate job-related issues to their boss or follow company policies
    • Motivation: clarifying tasks, providing feedback, setting goals, and rewarding desired behavior
    • Emotional expression: showing satisfaction and frustrations within a group
    • Information: transmitting data for decision-making
    • Social interaction: allowing individuals to interact with one another
  • Models of communication:
    • Shannon Weaver Model: transmission model with elements like information source, transmitter, receiver, destination, and noise source
    • Transactional Model: interactive model where each party is both a sender and a receiver, involving encoding, decoding, communicator, message, channel, and noise
    • Schramm Model: includes a feedback loop and processes of encoding, decoding, and interpretation, success depends on the fields of experience of the participants
