    • Germany lost the war and the Kaiser (king) abdicated
    • Germany became a republic, ruling without a king
    • The government moved from Berlin to Weimar, forming the Weimar Republic between 1919 and 1933
  • The Weimar Republic's main rules (constitution) included:
    • Political authority comes from the people (a democracy)
    • The president is elected by the German people
    • Article 48 allowed the President to take actions, including passing laws without a vote, if public safety was endangered
