• Aim: to establish Gaelic association for the preservation of language and culture

• Home Rule party, IRB + Catholic Church all supported the GAA
• Why we commemorate Gaa: •GAA revived irish national sports •GAA wanted to de-anglicise sporting life •GAA paved way for irish national sports which are played around the globe
• Gaa was founded in year 1884
• An impact was the IRB men used the GAA as an opportunity to recruit
• In 1887, the GAA almost split over IRB control of the organisation and almost went into decline
• The GAA introduced 2 new controversial rules in the GAA, rule 21 and rule 27

  • rule 21: banned members of the RIC or British army from joining the GAA

  •rule 27: banned the players to watch foreign games
• During bloody Sunday an RIC unit opened fire at a Tipperary-Dublin football match, killing 14
• Croke Park has hosted many music and culture events, apart from sports eg. Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé
