What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the
diffusion
of
water
from a
dilute
solution to a
concentrated
solution through a
partially permeable membrane
Dilute solutions contain a
high concentration
of
water
Concentrated solutions contain a
low concentration
of
water
Partially permeable membranes
allow some molecules
to pass through but not all
molecules
Cytoplasm is relatively
concentrated
solution, so it has really
low
concentration of water
if you put cytoplasm in water
osmosis
will take place.Water will move by
osmosis
from
outside
the
cell
to the
inside
the cell
If you place an animal
cells
in
water
the water
moving
will
cause
the
cell
to
expand
and the cell could even
burst
IF you place an animal cell in a
concentrated
solution ,then the
water
will move out of the cell by
osmosis
and the cell will
shrink
If you place a plant cell in
water
the
water
will move in by osmosis
and the cell will expand
What is a turgid ?
The
cell wall
prevents the cell from
bursting
, instead the cell becomes
swollen
If you place a
plant
cell into
concentrated
solution ,then the
water
moves out of the plant by
osmosis
When the plant cell shrinks its called a flaccid
