Osmosis

• What is osmosis?

  Osmosis is the diffusion of water from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane
• Dilute solutions contain a high concentration of water
• Concentrated solutions contain a low concentration of water
• Partially permeable membranes allow some molecules to pass through but not all molecules
• Cytoplasm is relatively concentrated solution, so it has really low concentration of water
• if you put cytoplasm in water osmosis will take place.Water will move by osmosis from outside the cell to the inside the cell
• If you place an animal cells in water the water moving will cause the cell to expand and the cell could even burst
• IF you place an animal cell in a concentrated solution ,then the water will move out of the cell by osmosis and the cell will shrink
• If you place a plant cell in water the water will move in by osmosis

  and the cell will expand
• What is a turgid ?

  The cell wall prevents the cell from bursting, instead the cell becomes swollen
• If you place a plant cell into concentrated solution ,then the water moves out of the plant by osmosis
• When the plant cell shrinks its called a flaccid
