London forces

Cards (5)

  • also known as instantaneous dipole-dipole interactions
  • electrons move to one side of the atom causing a strong negative dipole which reels the electrons in another atom so the same thing happens. there is then an attraction between the atoms due to induced dipoles
  • they are caused by the movement of electrons within a molecule
  • molecules with more electrons tend to form stronger London forces
  • only temporary forces of attraction between molecules
