Cards (13)

  • categorical imperative
    -must do no exceptions
    -perfect duties
central principles and instructs us to act in a way that could consistently serve as a universal law
  • hypothetical imperative
-things you do to achieve a goal
    -imperfect duties (flexible)
    -conditional command/recomendation
  • good will
moral value of an action depends on the motive behind it
  • 3 categorical imperative criteria
-universalisation: applicable in all space, time and circumstance without criticism
-people as an end to themselves: never use a person as a way of getting something
-autonomous moral agents (kingdom of ends): you should live as if everyone follows the categorical imperative
  • perfect duties
-duties to oneself (e.g. do not lie)
-duties to others (e.g. do not kill)
these are followed with no exceptions
  • imperfect duties
    -different for everyone
-duty to oneself (e.g. development of talents)
-duty to others (e.g. help those in need)
  • moral knowledge as 'a priori'
in the sense it precodes and is independent from empirical experiences (don't need senses already know)
  • summum bonum
    -highest good or ultimate good
-combination of two elements (moral virtue and happiness)
  • moral judgment as 'a priori synthetic'
they are not derived from empirical observations/experiences but also not mere and autologies/definitional truths, instead application of principles requires reference to world of experience to be understood(from beyond the world ,applied to the world(what is right and wrong))
  • 3 postulates
    -immorality
    -freedom
    -god
  • postulate of immorality
must be an afterlife as we do not have enough time or circumstances to reach summum bonum without immorality
  • postulate of freedom
because there is a moral code (law) and we have an ability to reason we must be free and have free will
  • postulate fo god
god exists due to the moral order and the realisation of the highest good. the knowledge came from god. immorality and freedom exist (need a god for existence)
