  • Primary prevention: prevention of disease or injury before it occurs (e.g., immunization)
  • Secondary prevention: early detection and treatment of disease or injury (e.g., screening for sexually transmitted diseases)
  • Tertiary prevention: prevention of further disability or death from a disease or injury (e.g., teaching insulin administration to a person with diabetes)
