Baddeley - coding in STM&LTM

Subdecks (1)

Cards (7)

  • baddeley had 4 word lists which were acoustically similar, acoustically dissimilar, semantically similar, semantically dissimilar
  • STM expt - pts were put into 4 groups (independent group) and shown only one word lists and then asked to recall it immediately in order
  • LTM expt -pts were asked to recall list after 20 min interval
  • it was found in STM pts given the acoustically similar list performed the worst which shows list was stored via sound in STM as they are getting muddled up, making mistakes
  • it was found in LTM pts given the semantically similar list performed the worst. this shows lists must be stored in LTM via their meaning because they all have the same meaning in this condition, the pt is making errors because they are not remembering the list in the correct order
  • as pts had problems recalling the acoustically similar words in STM. it was concluded sound of the material is important in STM and hence info must be coded in terms of sound. The same way meaning is important in LTM
