“Her father
embarked
at
sunrise”
‘Her father’- his identity has been diminished because he betrayed his country.
’embark’ means to begin something which is ironic as it is going to be the end of his life.
”sunrise” Japan is known as the land of the rising sun
“A shaven head full of powerful
incantations”
“Incantations”- he is under the spell of patriotism And propaganda- indoctrinated
the adjective “shaven” reveals how exposed the soldiers are, they are innocent and reinforces how they’re indoctrinated by the emperor
“Swivelled towards the sun”
The metaphor of the fishes represents how the soldiers are indoctrinated by the government
the sibilance reinforces that idea as it created an image of chant, bewitching
“sun” Japan is the land of the rising sun
“Green-blue translucent
sea”
Peace, tranquility in the colour imagery
the beauty of nature shows him what he’ll leave if he dies
the calmness juxtaposes his gory, sinister ending
