Aims of Punishment

• Retribution - the punishment should fit the crime even if its seen as revenge
• Reformation - punishing someone to help them change for the better
• Vindication - punishing someone to show that the law is important
• Reparation - punishing someone financially
• Deterrence - making a punishment so harsh it puts people off from committing a crime
• Protection - putting criminals in prison to protect the public
