neurons

Cards (5)

  • Morphological Classification of Neurons → multipolar (one axon, many dendrites) → bipolar (one axon, one dendrite) → unipolar → single axon that branches to peripheral axon and central axon. Specialised dendrites responding to specific sensory modality)
  • Conduction velocity is higher in large diameter axons.
  • fastest conducting myelinated axons are sensory from mechanoreceptors in skin & muscles (~80-120m/s). slowest are unmyelinated sensory axons heat and pain info (~1m/s)
  • Following a spike, the excitable membrane will enter to a refractory period, during which the threshold to initiate a second spike is increased.
  • Chemical synapse → neurotransmitter
Presynaptic site: axon terminal of presynaptic neuron
Postsynaptic site (dendrite of postsynaptic cell)
    Synaptic cleft (gap)
