Covalent Compounds

Cards (9)

  • How to find the name of the compound using the Chemical Formula
    Always look at the 1st and 2nd element;
    -for the 1st element, don't use the prefix if its subscript is 1, use prefix for 2 and above;

    -for the 2nd element, use the prefix for all numbers and add -ide
  • How to find the Chemical Formula using the name of the compound
    Always remember Greek prefixes like "mono" for 1 and "di" for 2; apply the prefixes to both elements, adding "-ide" to the second element
  • Chemical Formula of Covalent Compounds consists of the 1st and 2nd element
  • For the 1st Element in Covalent Compounds, don't use the prefix if its subscript is 1; use prefix for 2 and above
  • Changing Name to Chem. Formula
    • Ex: Chlorine Trifluoride -> ClF, Phosphorus Pentachloride -> PCl
  • Changing Chem. Formula to Name
    • Ex: ClF -> Chlorine Trifluoride, PCl -> Phosphorus Pentachloride
  • Covalent Compounds form between nonmetals and nonmetals
  • For the 2nd Element in Covalent Compounds, use the prefix for all numbers and add -ide
