Cards (29)

  • Social Vulnerability
Happens due to the inability of people, organizations, and societies to prevent severe effects from hazards because of the expected behavior in social interactions, institutions, and system of cultural values
  • The Philippines has high vulnerability due to various reasons such as being in the Pacific typhoon belt, an archipelagic country with many small islands, a primary agricultural and fishing economy, high poverty levels, and having the longest shoreline in the world at 32,400 km making it vulnerable to storm surges
  • Physical Vulnerability
Includes population density levels, place of settlement, site design, and materials used for infrastructure and housing
  • Environmental Vulnerability
    • Burning of Fossil fuels
    • Deforestation
    • Kaingin
  • Economic Vulnerability
    • Japan Earthquake
    • Philippines Earthquake
    • COVID 19 PANDEMIC
  • HAZARD

    • UP Visayas
    • Buildings
    • Super Typhoon Yolanda in 2008
    • 1990 Earthquake in North Luzon
  • Economic Vulnerability
Based on the economic status of individuals, communities, and nations. The poorer the country, the more vulnerable to disasters because they lack the funds or budgets to build sturdy structures and put other engineering measures in place which protect them from being affected by disasters
  • When hazardous events occur, physical elements are normally severely damaged
  • Social Vulnerability
    • During a typhoon, the line of communications were cut off when cell sites shutdown or disruption of transport system due to inability of small vehicles to pass through the flooded areas
  • Environmental Vulnerability
Caused by natural resources depletion and destruction. Organisms like humans, animals, and plants are all dependent on the environment for survival
  • DISASTER READINESS AND RISK REDUCTION
  • The country has a high level of poverty
  • The country is still a primary agricultural and fishing economy
  • Exposure and Vulnerability
Distinct concepts where a community can be exposed but not necessarily vulnerable
  • Hazard
A harmful condition, substance, human behavior, or condition that can cause loss of life, injury, or other health effects
  • Vulnerability
The characteristics and circumstances of a community, system, or asset that make it susceptible to the damaging effects of a hazard
  • People's vulnerability is often the greatest factor in determining their risk
  • Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction
    1. Effects of Hazard
    2. Exposure
    3. Vulnerability
    4. Risk
    5. Disasters
  • Exposure
The presence of elements at risk or chance of being harmed from natural or man-made hazard event
  • If a community is more exposed to hazard factors, the higher is the disaster risk or higher chance of disaster occurrence
  • Disasters
A serious disruption to the functioning of a community or society which causes widespread human, material, economic, or environmental losses
  • Thank you!
  • The hazards can lead to loss of life, injury, property damage, social and economical disruption, or environmental degradation
  • Hazard
    • Electric Hazards
    • Fire Hazards
  • Risk
Implies the probability of possible adverse effects resulting from the interaction of social and environmental systems
  • The country has the longest shoreline in the world at 32,400 km making it vulnerable to storm surges
