Oakley - Roles within couples

  • Oakley, was also studying the family and who does the housework. In her search she found that the claims of Young and Wilmott were not necessarily true. Oakley found that only 15% of husbands had high level participation in the housework and only 25% of husbands took responsibility for the childcare. Young and Wilmott's claim of a March of Progress did not seem to be marching very fast; in fact, when Boulton carried out similar research in 1983, she found that fewer than 20% of husbands had a major role in childcare. These findings can be used to criticise the claims of Young and Wilmott.
