  • Initially lighter industries (textiles) had led the way. Witte however believed that heavy goods production could be increased
  • By 1914 Russia was the world's fourth largest producer of coal pig iron and steel
  • Russian oil production trebled from 153 million puds to almost 570 million between 1885 and 1913
  • Moscow overtook St Petersburg as an industrial centre however St Petersburg grew too
  • Fuelled by a growing internal demand there was also a growth in light industry and textiles which still acounted for 40% of the total industrial output in 1910
  • By 1914 Russia was the world's fifth largest industrial power ( after the UK USA France and Germany)
  • However the cost of industrialisation was high and Russia became dependent on foreign investment
