• What is a constitution?

  • a set of rules for government
  • sets out the power and responsibilities of gov't institutions
  • clarifies relationship between the state and individuals
  • checks and balances
• Why do we need Constitutions?

  • can ensure political stability and order
  • can be important after a revolution or upheavel
  • can often (but not always) support democracy
  • often the basis of all other law (not in the uk tho)
  • may define a nation
  • can protect rights
  • can help to prevent abuse of power by the executive
