Subcultures

• Summary - when lacking means to achieve societal goals one may turn to deviant subcultures so they can achieve status through different means
• Strength - Shows the functions of subcultures
• Strength - Cloward + Ohlin show the difference in neighbourhood subcultures
• Weakness - Cohen ignores crimes of the wealthy and he overpredicts working class crime
• Weakness - Cohen assumes everyone starts with mainstream goals then turns to subcultures but some places may not have these same goals.
• Weakness - Not all subcultures are as clear cut as Cloward + Ohlin state, some are more complex and adopt several of the values they state
