  • How may parts are there in blood ?
    4 parts , platelets, white blood cells , red blood cells ,and plasma
  • What is the function of plasma ?
    Transports
    • digestion products (e.g.glucose)from the small intestine to other organs
    • carbon dioxide (from the organs to the lung )
    • waste products urea from the liver
  • What is the function of red blood cells ?
    • transports oxygen from the lungs to body cells
  • What adaptations do red blood cells have ?
    • contains the oxygen-carrying molecule,haemoglobin
    • no nucleus (more room for haemoglobin)
    • centre of the cell there are biconcave disc
  • Why is there disc in the red blood cell ?
    gives greater surface area so that oxygen diffuses in and out faster
  • What is the function of white blood cells ?
    they are part of the immune system ,making antibodies
  • Features of the white blood cells
    • contains a nucleus (containing DNA,encodes instructions for white blood cells to do their job )
  • What are platelets for ?
    they are tiny fragments of cells and they help the blood clot
  • What is donated blood used for ?
    • to replace blood lost during injury
    • some people are give platelets extracted from blood to help clotting
    • protein extracted from blood can also be useful e.g. antibodies
  • What do we need to make sure when donating blood ?
    • make sure the donated blood is the same blood type as the patient otherwise the the body immune system will reject the blood and the patient could die
    • lots of different diseases can be transmitted by blood
