Carbon is removed from the atmosphere by green plants during photosynthesis. Carbon is used to make sugars, which form the basis of plants and algae. When plants and algae are eaten by animals, some carbon becomes part of their bodies and moves through the food chain. When plants, algae, and animals die, detritus feeders and microorganisms break down their remains, returning carbon to the atmosphere. The burning of wood and fossil fuels also releases CO2 back into the air
