  • Security of tenure
    Judges are appointed for an open ended term only limited by the requirement that they retire at 75
  • Guaranteed salaries paid from the Consolidated Fund
    Judges' salaries are classified as standing services and therefore are paid automatically from the Consolidated Fund - set so politicians can't manipulate their salaries to control them
  • Offence of Contempt of Court
    under subjudice rules, the media, ministers, and other individuals are prevented from speaking out publicly during legal proceedings -justice is administered fairly without public or political interference
  • Independent appointments commission
    The Judicial Appointments Comission has greater transparency to the appointment process and addresses concerns that the system was open to political bias
  • Training and experience of senior judges
    Most have served an 'apprenticeship' as barristers and they all come to the bench having achieved a certain status in their profession and have proved they can act without personal or political bias
