• Although this amount was still limited in comparison with the size of the country nevertheless the growth rate was impressive
• The railways helped open up the Russian interior and allowed more extensive exploitation of Russia's raw materials
• Transport costs fell bringing down the price of goods
• The most acclaimed development was the impressive construction of the Trans-Siberian  Railway line which crossed Russia from west to east opening up Western Siberia for emigration and farming- strategic benefits
