Work, Energy and Power

• Work done - energy transferred by a force moving over a distance
• Work done - the product of the force and the displacement in the direction of the force
• Work done = Energy transferred
• Energy is the ability to do work
• Gravitational Potential Energy - energy possessed by a mass due to its position in the gravitational field
• Kinetic energy - the energy a body has due to its motion
• Elastic potential energy - energy stored as a result of applying a force to deform an elastic object
• Electric potential energy - amount of work done to move a positive charge unit from infinity to a point in the field
• Efficiency - ratio of useful output energy of a machine to the input energy of the machine
• Law of conservation of energy - energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be converted from one form to another. The total energy of an isolated system cannot change, it is conserved over time
• Power - work done per unit time
• Watt - rate of transfer of energy of one joule per second
