Jesus Gives us New Life

Cards (21)

  • Jesus Gives us New Life
  • What are the 3 initial sacraments/the 1st we encounter?
  • Jesus: '“To be born again” - “new life”; way of life is very different from our old one—our desires, choices, & emotions are all now connected to God through this'
  • In the conversation of Jesus with Nicodemus (Jewish leader), He explained that in order to enter the kingdom of heaven, we must be “born again”, to be born of water & spirit
  • Jesus can lead us to new life; through Baptism & presence of Christ we become more connected with God
  • Sin separates us from God & damages our relationship with Him; creates a barrier between us & God; shows our self-centeredness/selfishness
  • 3 initial sacraments (1st to encounter)
    • Confirmation
    • Holy Eucharist
    • Baptism - 1st sacrament we receive & the reception of the other sacraments depends on it; after being baptized, we formally become a new relationship we have with Him
  • Who can baptize: Bishops, Priests, Pope, Deacons, anyone (in case of emergency & only if they’re baptized)
  • Baptism is necessary for salvation
  • Baptism can only be received once
  • A conditional baptism cannot be performed for any reason other than grave doubt about the validity of the original application
  • What are the effects of the sacrament of baptism? Visible sign of Baptism = the water; number of the Church & receives new life as a child
  • 2 (+1) kinds of Baptism
    • Infant Baptism - some don’t believe a child consented to this; most common; delaying baptism until a child can understand the sacrament may put the child’s salvation in danger, should they die unbaptized
    • Adult Baptism - done to the person who are converted to Christianity; normally occurs today as part of the Rite of Christian Initiations for Adults (RCIA) & is immediately followed by Confirmation & Communion
    • Baptism by Blood - martyrs; they desired to be baptized in the other 2 types of baptism but weren’t able to
  • The Celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism includes roles for both parents & godparents, essentials of the rite: the pouring of water over the head of the person to be baptized/immersion of the person in water, the words “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Conditional Baptism would only be performed if there is grave doubt about the validity of the original application of the sacrament
  • The Effects of the Sacrament of Baptism include the removal of the guilt of both original & personal sins
  • Trinitarian formula: 'the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit'
