  • The new right see competition as beneficial to the survival and advancement of society and themselves.
  • The 1988 Education Reform Act was introduced by Margaret Thatcher.
  • The New Right is merged with neoliberalism and Right Wing (Conservative) Politics.

  • New Right sociologists believe that marketisation means that schools are run more like businesses in that they have to attract parents by competing with each other in the market.

    Schools provide the students with what they want (success in exams) and if they don’t they go out of business (close down).
  • David (1993) describes this approach as parentocracy (rule by parents).
  • Marketisation has created an ‘educational market’ by reducing direct state control over education and increasing both competition between school and parental choice of school.
  • The reform act aimed to promote competition within schools by providing parents and pupils with greater choice over education they receive,
    to run schools on ‘market principles’ and improve efficiency/competition by creating an education 'market' so that schools were competing against each other for 'customers'.
  • Ball (1994) and Whitty (1998) both believe that they reproduce and legitimate inequalities.
  • Was achieved by Standardised tests including GCSES, National Curriculum, League tables, Formula funding and Open enrolment
  • National CurriculumWas introduced so everyone has the same quality of learning and same knowledge of skills.
    • Introduced individuality which made people personally responsible for themselves.
