Plant tissues

Cards (10)

  • What are epidermal cells ?
a thing layer of cells on the top and bottom of leaves
  • What do epidermis do ?
protects the surface of the leaf
  • What is the adaptation of the upper epidermis (top of the leaf)?
its transparent allowing light to pass through to the photosynthetic cells below
  • What is the waxy cuticle ?
a thin layer of oily material on the upper epidermis
  • What is the function of the waxy cuticle ?
reduces the evaporation of water from the surface helps the leaf not dry out
  • Where is stomata and what is it for ?
Stomata are located on the surface of plant leaves and are used for gas exchange (carbon dioxide in, oxygen out) and water regulation.
  • What is important about palisade cells ?
    packed with photosynthesis
    contains chlorophyll
  • Key feature of spongy mesophyll ?
full of air spaces allowing carbon dioxide to diffuse from the stomata
  • Where can you find a meristem tissue ?
at the growing tips e.g. shoots and roots
  • Meristem tissue contains stem cells that can differentiate into any type of plant cell
