The three temptations by Satan in the wilderness were not the only temptations our Lord ever suffered on Earth
Speaker: 'Quote'
The first temptation
1. Turning stones into bread
2. Jesus quotes Deut. 8:3 to resist Satan’s temptation
3. Jesus had the power to change the stones to bread but did not use His power selfishly
4. Jesus refuses Satan’s challenge to Him to misuse His power to escape the pain of hunger, human weakness
The three temptations of Christ
Matthew 4:1-11
Mark 1:12-13
Luke 4:1-13
Jesus was tempted by the devil for forty days, but He was undoubtedly tempted at other times
The first temptation concerns the lust of the flesh
Our Lord is hungry, and the devil tempts Him to convert stones into bread
Sins related to lust of the flesh
Adultery (sexual immorality)
Impurity
Lustful pleasures
Idolatry
Sorcery
Hostility
Quarreling
Jealousy
Outbursts of anger
Selfish ambition
Dissension
Division
Envy
Drunkenness
Wild parties
The scripture of Matthew 4:1-11 tells about the events during Jesus’s temptation by Satan in the desert
Israel's Exodus is called a baptism in I Corinthians 10:2
Paul urges God’s people to put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh (Romans 13:14)
Romans 13:14 “Let the Lord Jesus Christ be as near to you as the clothes you wear. Then you won't try to satisfy your selfish desires”
According to St. Paul, we were all by nature children of wrath, who once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind (Ephesians 2:3)
Many wrongly conclude and teach that without sinful desire, there is no temptation
The main point is how the Lord deals with temptation in the light of His humanity
The lust of the flesh is part of worldliness, driven by the desire for worldly, selfish pleasures, which draw our hearts away from God and ultimately lead to death
Three passages Jesus quotes come from three sins of Israel
Complaints about lack of food (Ex. 16)
Putting God to the test by expecting him to produce water from a rock
Worshiping a golden calf
The 40 days of lent is observed as a time of fasting, prayer, penitence and almsgiving, in remembrance of these events
First, we need to remember what Jesus said to His disciples at the Garden of Gethsemane, “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41)
The second temptation
Throw yourself off pinnacle of temple
They were tempted to be their own god
When the serpent said they would be like God if they ate the fruit, this was the pride of life
Throw yourself down because God will protect you
Jesus knew that throwing Himself off the Temple would be a tempting or testing of God
Romans 13:14: '“Let the Lord Jesus Christ be as near to you as the clothes you wear. Then you won't try to satisfy your selfish desires”'
No shortcuts to glory for Jesus
Jesus quotes Deut. 6:13 and says He will only worship God, no one else worthy of worship
Jesus Victorious Over Temptation
For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin
The third temptation concerns the lust of the eyes
Satan had some power to give Jesus world kingdoms with all their glory, but the Father would give Him all the nations after His death, resurrection, and ascension by doing the Father’s will
Through His perfect obedience, Jesus became an obedient Son, perfect sacrifice for our sins and sympathetic heavenly high priest to intercede for us to the Father
We can be encouraged to follow His example by hiding the Word in our hearts to more consistently resist temptation and do the Lord’s will
The Third Temptation
Satan offers Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and their glory if He falls down and worships him
The Second Temptation
The devil challenges Christ to throw Himself down from the pinnacle of the temple if He is the Son of God
We need to be led and controlled by the Spirit in our prayers and actions
Importantly, Paul urges God’s people to put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh (Romans 13:14)
Satan said you can have nations now without going to the cross
Just worship me once and you can have the spoils without the battle
What Jesus Enduring Temptations Means To Us
Jesus was victorious over temptation, and we can draw near with confidence to the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need
Satan wants Jesus to prove the Father is with Him
Jesus trusts that the Father is with Him and does not test Him
The second temptation concerns the pride of life
The devil uses a verse of Scripture (Psalm 91:11–12), but the Lord replies again with Scripture to the contrary, stating that it is wrong for Him to abuse His own powers
EUTYCHIANISM or MONOPHYSITISM

What people saw of Christ was a phantom, an illusion
