• Some stem cells remain in the body, f.e. In bone marrow, skin And liver.
• Stem cells give the tissues they are in considerable powers of regeneration and repair.
• The precise location of stem cells within a tissue is called the stem cell niche.
• In striated muscle there are stem cells that remain inactive unless there is an injury. The stem cells in the niche are the proliferated and differentiated to replace damaged muscle tissue.
• Stem cell niches are of research interest because it should be possible to generate human tissue in labs and use it in restorative surgery.
