Where cells go through a series of changes involving growth and division
Animal and Plant cells contain a very large number of cells , and this means that they have to be able to divide
Describe the 3 stages of the cell cycle?
In the first stage, DNA replicates to form two copies of each chromosome --> In the second stage, mitosis occurs --> In the third stage, the cytoplasm and cell membrane divide to form two identical cells
In the first stage of the Cell Cycle, the cell also grows and copies it internal structures (like the mitochondria and the ribosomes)
Describe what happens during Mitosis?
One set of chromosomes is pulled to each end of the cell - The nucleus divides - The cytoplasm and cell membranes divide to form two identical cells (This can be remembered with the abbreviation CNC - Chromosome.Nucleus.Cells)
Why is cell division by mitosis important?
It makes new cells for growth and development of multicellular organisms - It makes new cells for repairing damaged tissues - It makes new cells for asexual reproduction
Mitosis takes place when an organism repairs itself (e.g. when a broken bone heals)
