Mitosis and the Cell Cycle

    Cards (8)

    • What is the cell cycle?
Where cells go through a series of changes involving growth and division
    • Animal and Plant cells contain a very large number of cells , and this means that they have to be able to divide
    • Describe the 3 stages of the cell cycle?
In the first stage, DNA replicates to form two copies of each chromosome --> In the second stage, mitosis occurs --> In the third stage, the cytoplasm and cell membrane divide to form two identical cells
    • In the first stage of the Cell Cycle, the cell also grows and copies it internal structures (like the mitochondria and the ribosomes)
    • Describe what happens during Mitosis?
One set of chromosomes is pulled to each end of the cell - The nucleus divides - The cytoplasm and cell membranes divide to form two identical cells (This can be remembered with the abbreviation CNC - Chromosome.Nucleus.Cells)
    • Why is cell division by mitosis important?
It makes new cells for growth and development of multicellular organisms - It makes new cells for repairing damaged tissues - It makes new cells for asexual reproduction
    • Mitosis takes place when an organism repairs itself (e.g. when a broken bone heals)
    • Mitosis happens during asexual reproduction
