  • How are fish kept in cages?
    • fish are kept in cages in the sea to stop them using as much energy swimming about
    • the cage also protects them from interspecific predation
    • they are fed a diet of food pellets that is carefully controlled to max the amount of energy they get - the better the quality of food - the quicker and bigger the fish will grow
    • young fish reared in special tanks to ensure as many survive as possible
    • crucial to keep young fish separated from bigger fish and provide regular food - make sure big fish don't eat little ones - intraspecific predation - organisms eat individuals of the same species
    • fish kept in cages - more prone to disease and parasites - one pest is sea lice - which can be treated with pesticides that kill them - to avoid pollution from chemical pesticides - biological pest control can be used instead
    • fish can be selectively bred - produce less aggressive and faster growing fish
  • how can fish be farmed in tanks?
    • water can be monitored to check that the temperature, pH and oxygen is fine
    • easy to control how much food is supplied and give exactly the right type of food
    • water can be removed and filtered - remove waste food and fish poo - keeps water clean for fish and avoid pollution where the water ends up
