  • What is the case study of a non-UK based natural weather event? In the topic Global hazards
    Cyclone Aila
  • Evaluate the responses to your chosen non-uk based natural weather event.
Short term- Charities such as Oxfam, Christian aid gave out emergency aid with items like food, blankets, water, soap, plastic sheets to people.
Long term- Cyclone shelters. These are large concrete buildings, built on stilts and on high ground, which can withstand the wind and rain. They are also distribution shelters for items such as food, clothing, medicine after a cyclone. However, they cost a lot of money and there are not enough cyclone shelters for everyone, so some of the poorest people who live far away from them end up not being able to fit in.
  • What are the causes of cyclone Aila ( which I need to say before my paragraphs for cyclone Aila)?
Cyclone Aila hit the south west of Bangladesh on the 25th of May 2009.
Warm ocean temperatures of at least 26 degrees in the Bay of Bengal proceeding the tropical storm.
  • Evaluate the effects to your chosen non UK based natural weather hazard.
Short term- 750,000 People lost their homes and 3.5 million of the poorest people were affected. 1 million people were left with nothing to drink or a contaminated water supply- leading to disease.
Long term- As the embankment has not been repaired in many places ( lack of Government money) the area still floods regularly. Education has been affected- they have new book but not benches and desks meaning that there is only 1 room for 200 students. This means students all have to go to school at different times of a day.
  • What is the case study of a UK based natural weather hazard event?
    UK heatwave 2018
  • What is a heatwave?
A heatwave is a long period during which the temperature is much higher than normal.
  • In July 2018 temperatures reached 28 degrees for 11 days in a row
  • What were the causes of the heatwave?
In July 2018, the jetstream looped to the North of the UK, bringing with it hot weather from the south and creating a high pressure area (anticyclone )that sat over the UK
  • Evaluate the effects of the heatwave.
Hot weather affects wildlife such as barn owls who are struggling to find food and water.
Tarmac on roads in Wales melted in the sun. The damage is estimated to cost 3.6 million billion to repair.
Steel railway tracks expand and buckle in the heat.
Car breakdown 'call outs' were up 14% due to overheating cars.
  • Evaluate how people and organisations responded to the heatwave.
A health alert known as a level 3 heatwave action was issued by the government. Young children, the elderly and those with serious illnesses were encouraged to stay in the shade.
Network rail has imposed speed restrictions- slower trains expert lower forces on the track and reduce the chance of buckling.
Northern Ireland has issued a hosepipe ban.
  • What is the case study of one river basin in the UK?
    River tees
  • Name of river basin in the UK. Explain how human activity has influenced the geomorphic processes in this landscape.
Flood defences in Yarm- Since the 1995 floods a new flood defence scheme costing 2.1 million has been built at Yarm. They have reinforced concrete walls( with 34 metal flood gates for access by people and vehicles), built earth embankments(levees) and put in gabions to protect walls and embankments from erosion.
Cow green reservoir- It was built in 1970 to provide water for the growing industries on Teeside. It stores water in the winter to help manage supply in the summer. It limits the natural flow of water downstream. Material carried by the river is deposited in the reservoir due to the super flow here. This can increase erosion downstream.
  • What is the case study of one coastal landscape in the UK?
    The holderness coast
  • What is the background around behind the holderness coast?
The Holderness Coast is located in Yorkshire. It extends for the 61km from flambrough head in the north of Spurn point in the South.
  • What is flamborough head?
    Flamborough head-
  • what are some impacts of climate change worldwide?
Lower crop yields could increase malnutrition, ill health and death from starvation, particularly in lower latitude.
In some places, reduced rainfall means that theres an increased threat from wildfires. These can damage homes and also put people’s lives at risk. Some species are declining due to warming eg coral reefs are suffering from bleaching due to increasing sea water temperatures
  • What are some impacts of climate change in the UK?
Increased pressure on the NHS from patients developing heat related illnesses. Thames barrier needs replacing as sea levels rise. Increased flooding leading to death, anxiety , depression, homelessness
  • What are the two landforms on the holderness coast ?
Flambrough head- caves, arches, stacks, stumps
    Spurn point- spit
