Liberal approaches

• Liberalism is an umbrella term for christians who reject any idea the bible is the literal inspired word of god:

  • social gospel movement
  • process theology
• The social gospel movement aimed to apply christian ethics to social issues and put the Lord's prayer into practice
• "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven"
• The social gospel movement was founded by protestant intellectuals in the late 19th and early 20th century in the US and Canada
• Process theology takes on the discrepancies between claims made by the bible and what science tells us
• process theology may believe:

  • God is not the creator; he exists panentheistically with the universe
  • God is not all powerful; he persuades matter into more complex arrangements
• Liberal approaches don't necessarily believe the resurrection, miracles, etc
• Liberal approaches fully believe the bible is a human made document
