    E - Implies solitary confinement - locked away. Suggests Scrooge is trapped by his oyster. (reinforced in Stave 2 'solitary as a child') The oyster is a symbol of what traps and controls him - capitalism.

    E - Suggests that Belle wanted to be Scrooge's only idol, however she has been displaced, suggesting Scrooge has more important things to worship - but what can be more important than love?
    Z - Verb 'displaced'
    E - In order for Scrooge to be accepted by this new idol, he must sacrifice himself, and all the good and happiness he has. Therefore we can infer that the thing that has displaced love and happiness is Scrooge's id - 'gain'. This could be due to Scrooge feeling that 'one of the hardest things of life is being poor', which Scrooge has experienced before - which were the worst times of his life. Perhaps we are finding out why Scrooge is the way he is?

    E - White snow = upper class, life is easy for them, they are untouched and looking down on the poor.
    Dirtier snow = lower class, constantly kicked about, trampled on and looked down upon by upper class
    Z - 'Foreshadowing'
    E - Eventually all snow melts and has the same ending. Suggests that it doesn't matter whether we are white snow or dirty snow, we all end the same. Perhaps this is Dickens message? We should all help eachother whilst we are different, before we all end the same

  • Written during the Industrial Evolution in Victorian London - when poverty and inequality were growing very fast. Dickens wants to highlight the hardships of the poor, especially children.
