Strengths and weaknesses of the Ontological argument

Cards (4)

  • Strength - deductive
Deductive argument: based on fact. Therefore a proof
  • Weakness - deductive
Kant's objections - 'necessary existence' is part of what we mean by 'God', does not follow from this that God exists in reality. It is a definition of God but it does not mean that there is really a God. They do not disprove his existence but show that his existence cannot be shown by logic
  • Strength - faith
not meant to be a logical proof but instead a confession of faith. For those with faith, it aligns with that
  • Weakness - faith
Reject the definition of God because it limits him.
