  • Library is a place containing books, periodicals, and sometimes recorded music.
  • Librarians handle libraries.

  • The 3 kinds of cards are:
    Author
    Title
    Subject
  • Cards are found in the card catalog.
  • Call number is a white code at the bottom of the book to identify the classification of the book.
  • Librarians classify the books according to the DDC or Dewey Decimal System.
  • Melvil Dewey created the Dewey Decimal System.
  • Melvil Dewey was born on December 10, 1851.
  • Melvil Dewey created the Dewey Decimal System in 1872 when he was 21 years olds.
  • Melvil Dewey started the first school for librarians.
  • Philosophy is the study of thinking.
  • Bible is one of the first books to be printed on the printing press which was invented by Johannes Gutenberg in the 15th century.
  • The 2 divisions of books are fiction and nonfiction.

  • Each card was used to be written in "library hand."
  • Cards are alphabetically arranged.
  • Cards include the place of publication, date of publication, publisher, number of pages, call number for nonfiction, and letters from the spine for fiction.
  • There are 10 classifications in the Dewey Decimal System.
  • 000-099 is General References. Encyclopedias and Almanacs are found here.
  • 100-199 is Philosophy. It is the study of thinking. The Left-Handed Book, Psychology in Action, and Mysterious Detectives: Physics are found here.
  • 200-299 is Religion. The Bible is found here.
  • 300-399 is Society. Things about politics and economy are found here.
  • 400-499 is Language. In Other Words, Mad as a Wet Hen, and The Magic and Mystery of Words are found here.
  • 500-599 is Natural Science. Things about Science and Math are found here.
  • 600-699 is Technology. Books about machines, medicine, and farming like Traditional American Farming, Car Care for Dummies, and Organic Farming are found here.
  • 700-799 is Arts. Things about architecture, drawing, and photography are found here.
  • 800-899 is Literature. Poetry, plays, and stories are found here. Literature was used to be for all fiction books but they won't fit.
  • 900-999 is Geography and History. Things about countries, wars, and travels are found here. Questions like "What countries fought in the Korean War?", "What is the smallest continent on Earth?", and "Why was the "Draft" started in the US?" are answered here.
  • Fiction books are prose from imagination written for fun only. Although just imaginary, they can be based from facts.
  • Nonfiction books focus on information and facts.
