• Gaseous exchange

  • The breathing system performs gaseous exchange where carbon dioxide is exchanged for oxygen
  • The lungs are in the upper part of the thorax and protected by ribs
  • They are separated from the abdomen by the diaphragm
• larynx also known as the voice box is responsible for sound production
• alveoli gaseous exchange - carbon dioxide in oxygen out
• gas exchange of carbon dioxide & oxygen in fish takes place in the gills
• birds do not have a diaphragm instead they have air sacs which draw air in and push air out
• invertebrates don't have lungs or circulatory system only a trachea which transports air directly to cells around the body
