• Summary - they base their views on RCT, criminals weigh up the risks against the rewards when deciding whether or not to commit crime
• Strength - Many studies support RCT. Rettig gave students a scenario on committing crime + found that the amount of punishment was a deciding factor
• Strength - Feldman - People said if rewards was greater and risk was lesser than it was more worth committing
• Strength - Bennett + wright interviewed bulgulars and found that isk was the most important factor
• Weakness - Retting and Feldman's experiments were lavatory experiments which mean they have low ecological validity and might not apply to everyday life
• Weakness - Bennett and Wright studied unsuccessful criminals not successful ones so we don't nwo if it applies to all bulgulars ways of thinking
• Weakness - Many crimes are impulsive like violent crimes so they do not use rational decisions.
