Geo-engineering

Cards (5)

  • Geo-engineering schemes are projects designed to tackle the effects of climate change directly, usually through removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, or limiting the amount of sunlight reaching the planets surface.
  • Critics claim that geo-engineering isn't realistic and may be a distraction from reducing emissions.
  • Solar radiation management attempts to reflect sunlight back into space, potentially through the use of orbiting mirrors, or sulphates sprayed into the stratosphere.
  • Carbon dioxide removal is where they aim to suck the carbon out of the atmosphere on a massive scale, using a combination of biological and mechanical methods such as seeding the ocean with iron pellets to create plankton.
  • Earth radiation management suggests that negative effects of climate change can be offset by allowing heat to escape into space, for example thinning circus clouds.
