Animal Studies- Lorenz

Cards (2)

  • A strength of Lorenz's research is that there is further research support for Lorenz's concept of imprinting during a critical time period.
Regollin and Vallortigara (1995) found when chicks were exposed to a simple, moving, shape combination they followed the original one more closely.
This is a strength as it gives Lorenz's finding reliability, increasing the validity of the concept of imprinting
  • A limitation of Lorenz's research is that animals are very different to humans.
There's a problem generalizing findings from birds to humans as it seems the mammalian attachment system differs quite a lot from that of birds. E.g.; mammalian mothers show more emotional attachment to young than birds do.
This is a limitation because it means it's not appropriate to try generalize any of Lorenz's ideas to humans.
