Harlow conducted an experiment using an indepedent groups design. 16 baby rhesus monkeys were separated from their mothers and were placed in a cage with 2 'wire model' mothers, one mother was made of plain wire, the other was covered in a soft, warm cloth.
Condition 1: milk dispensed by the plain wire mother
Condition 2: milk dispensed by the soft, cloth mother
Findings: The babies spent most of their time cuddling the cloth mother and when they were frightened, they went to the cloth mother for comfort.
