  • subjective - criteria difficult to measure objectively to physical conditions. for example environmental mastery may be subject to personal opinion as what one person deems as being successful another may not. Hence, definition may be inconsistent.
  • cultural relativism - ideal mental health is deemed as highly important in our culture but less so in others. consequently, usefulness of definition may be limited.
  • very few people would match all criteria and so majority of population would be considered abnormal. Therefore making definition useless.
  • it is a positive approach because it focuses on desirable qualities i.e. what the person has rather than lacks
  • cultural relativism - definition is only relevant to individualistic cultures whereas collectivist cultures may not agree with Jahoda's criteria of Autonomy/personal growth. hence definition cannot be used in collectivist cultures.
