Gender Inequality

Cards (5)

  • Gender Inequality
Gender Inequality is a cause of health inequalities through the poor health outcomes of men.
Due to social stigma surrounding many aspects of men's health, preventing them from reaching out for help from a healthcare professional
including mental health and experiencing cancer symptoms -> reduced life expectancy and a higher suicide rate.
  • Gender Inequality - EXAMPLE & ANALYSIS
60% of men have admitted they wouldn't even bring up prostate cancer, despite it effecting 50, 000 a year and killing 12,000.
This demonstrates the proportion of males who don't speak up due to stigma, leading to health inequality in the form of poor health outcomes.
  • Gender Inequality - REBUTTAL
    Women also experience health inequality
Despite having a higher life expectancy than males, females will tend to live more of their life in poorer health.
Often make fewer GP visits, receive less health monitoring and are potentially more susceptible to taking more dangerous medications - a prominent example of this being many hormonal birth controls.
  • Gender Inequality - REBUTTAL (EXAMPLE & ANALYSIS)
On average, women in Glasgow spend 20 years in poor health, compared to men who only spend an average of 17 years in poor health.
This 3-year difference shows that women are actually more likely to suffer from long-term health conditions.
  • Gender Inequality - EVALUATION
Although the society's stigma prevents men from receiving proper healthcare, both women and men experience health inequality.
