AO3 depression explanation

Cards (4)

  • client is responsible for own thinking and therefore their depression. this could be seen as unethical as places more blame on person but it can also be seen as an advantage as person has power to change thinking and hence get rid of illness
  • idea that people with depression have irrational thinking is supported by research. researchers found depressed pts made more errors in logic when interpreting written material than non - depressed pts. suggesting concepts of irrational thinking and cognitive biases in ellis' and becks models are valid
  • problematic to suggest client is responsible for own thinking and disorder. this is because it may lead to therapist focusing on internal causes and hence overlooking external causes. for example factors in environment that could be changed
  • cognitive explanations of depression are often criticised for being correlational and hence do not show cause and effect relationship between negative thinking and depression. it is just as likely negative thinking is an effect of depression than the cause. this means these explanations are limited as do not explain how the irrational thinking arises.
