  • TANF (Temporary Assistance For Needy Families)
One way the US government tackle socio-economic inequalities is through TANF - Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.
TANF is aimed at tackling economic inequalities, particularly within singe parent and black and Hispanic households. It is a scheme which aims to help poor families though giving them support to get jobs, cash grants and childcare schemes. It is available to struggling families for a period of up to 5 years.
  • TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) - EXAMPLE AND ANALYSIS
The scheme has been so effective that in 2019 alone, over 160, 000 children who came from poor, food insecure backgrounds were lifted out of poverty.
This shows the significant success of the policy in easing the effects of economic inequalities on children, by evidencing the vast amount of families that have been aided by the financial support provided by TANF.
  • TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) - REBUTTAL
However, TANF is not equally implemented in each state.
As each individual state is able to decide where the budget given is allocated, many states will choose to prioritise government organisations that support people in these situations.
  • TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) - REBUTTAL (EXAMPLE AND ANALYSIS)
2/3rds of the funding in Arizona is not given directly to single-mother families and those in poverty, but to social services.
This highlights that the funding TANF can provide may not be dealt fairly or appropriately, and as this varies across state, it can create further issues of inequality in the attention and help struggling families are given by their state government.
  • TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) - EVALUATION
Overall, TANF is effective in many ways - providing an opportunity to reduce child poverty in the USA significantly - however, the way it is implemented is unfair, as the state-by-state nature of the policy creates further issues of inequality, reducing the efficiency of the scheme.
