  • Medicaid
A further way the US government tackle social and economic inequalities is through Medicaid.
Medicaid provides state-funded health insurance for those who are poor or disabled and wouldn’t be able to spare the money to pay for one otherwise. This helps to bridge the gap between rich and poor as it ensures that those who are vulnerable and can’t afford can access care.
  • Medicaid - EXAMPLE & ANALYSIS
More than 1 in 5 Americans are covered by the programme, and in 2022 roughly 84.8 million Americans we supported in some way by the scheme.
This demonstrates the vast amount of people who are able to receive health care with the help of Medicaid that would not be able to access proper medical coverage without the policy.
  • Medicaid - Rebuttal
However, Medicaid’s eligibility requirements differ from state to state and are also very tight in a lot of them.
While the federal government establishes general guidelines, each state has flexibility in determining its own Medicaid eligibility requirements, benefits, and application procedures, and this can create issues of inconsistency across the country.
  • Medicaid - Rebuttal (EXAMPLE & ANALYSIS)
In many states, to gain support from the scheme, an individual must own less than $2000 in assets such as clothes, furniture, etc.
This shows that the implementation of Medicaid is unfair, causing inequality across the USA by only allowing certain people to access the full benefit scheme based on the area they live in, leading to issues of unequal support.
  • Medicaid - EVALUATION
To evaluate, although it provides some issues of unequal access to support across states, the policy has been largely effective as it is able to provide a vast amount of American citizens with health insurance that they may not be able to access otherwise.
