Osmosis

• Osmosis is the movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration.
• The water molecules pass both ways through the membrane, given that the molecules move randomly. But there is a net movement to the lower concentration side.
• Water molecules would move into a strong sugar solution. This means the solution will get more dilute. The water acts as if it is 'evening up' the concentrations.
