  • How is chromatography used?

To separate mixtures of substances that are soluble in the same solvent
  • What is used to prevent evaporation of volitile solvents?
    A lid
  • What is drawn on the paper?
A pencil line is drawn because ink can dissolve in the solvent and run. The solvent must not touch the mixture spot of colour. (Or else they will mix up)
  • What happens when the colour moves?
    The solvent moves
  • What does the solvent move through?

    It moves through paper
  • What is a solvent?

    The mobile phase
  • What is paper chromatography?

    stationary phase
  • What do different substances have?
Different solubilities in the solvent (mobile phase)
  • What else do different substances have?
Different attractions to the paper (stationary phase)
  • Where are they carried to?
    Different differences
  • What are dyes called?
    Spots
