  • 1948-51 led eradication campaign
    • spraying breeding sites and water sources with DDT (malarial insecticide) 

    SUCCESS:
    1. mortality rates dropped 6/1000 to 0.6/1000 by 1951.
    2. 1973 WHO "Malaria eliminated from Mauritius"
  • 1975 Cyclone Gervaise reintroduced Malaria
    VECTOR: infected health worker
    New breeding sites due to stagnant water
    1982: Eradication Campaign
    Spraying, Predators to Larvae (fish) and Chloroquine (drug)
    screened 175k passengers/year
    serveilled symptomatic people for 4 months
    SUCCESS= only 1 case of infected visitor since 1997
